KEY TO YOUR PERSUASIVE ESSAY: ETHOS, LOGOS, AND PATHOS
Aristotle's Three Ways To Persuade An Audience

The man who literally wrote the book (Rhetoric) over 2000 years ago worked out that there were 3 things involved in a speech (speaker, speech, audience) and therefore there were 3 means of persuasion (or appeals).

1.Ethos - the speaker's character and reputation.

2.Logos - the speech's logical arguments.

3.Pathos - the audience's emotions.

Aristotle also recommended using them in that order to be most persuasive. ie start your speech by demonstrating your credibility, then move into the logical arguments and always finish with a good tug on the emotions. (Note: Conveniently the order is alphabetical E/L/P)

So the first of the elements of public speaking to think of is how you'll use Ethos, Logos and Pathos in putting your presentation together.

May 15th POWER POINT ON PERSUASIVE SPEAKING WITH LINKS

The Downloaded Power Point File is at the bottom of this POST.

I've embellished the speaking tips that were prepared by Douglas A Parker in 2001.  I've turned it into a power point presentation with links that I hope will be meaningful and instructive to you.  Please review the slides on your own and watch the videos often to help you understand some of the techniques of persuation.

We have watched to the end of slide 10 of 30, and I have tried to analize the videos for you, so that the concept of Persuasive Speaking becomes more understandable to you.

We will continue to view/discuss these slides, while hearing from our last few presenters on some tips that they Discovered on Persuasive Speaking.

May 15 Journal Entry - Green Communications Booklets

In  your communications journals, recall and list your own experiences of trying to
convince someone about something.

If  you want to shift someone’s way of thinking to align with yours, you need to
use skills to convince others about your position.

The Elements of Persuasive Speech

Research "The Elements of Persuasive Speech" and be prepared to share what you have discovered with the class.

1.)  You are expected to hand in one copy of your document, along with Bibliography.

2.)  You will present this information beginning next class.

3.)  Next Computer class you will look for supporting material (videos, work sheets, activities) to share with or do with the class.
